A note for your reading
Words such as some, most, and every set different tasks for the evidence. A single clear example can establish that something is possible, but it cannot establish how common it is. A clear exception can challenge a claim about every case without showing that the claim fails in most cases. When an argument shifts between these words, pause at the shift. Restate the exact reach of the conclusion and consider what the example can establish. That keeps a striking case from carrying a broader claim than its logical role allows.
Keep asking / 03
Three questions to carry forward
- Does the conclusion concern possibility, frequency, or a claim about every case?
- What exactly would this example or exception establish about that stated scope?
- Has the wording moved to a broader claim without adding suitable support?
