A note for your reading

An ordered scale tells you which position comes before another. It does not automatically tell you that every step covers the same distance. Imagine labels arranged from low to high without a rule defining the gaps between them. Moving up a label would have a clear direction, but calling that movement twice as large as another would need more justification. Before interpreting arithmetic built from such labels, ask what their spacing means. This keeps the ordering useful while making clear which further claims depend on assumptions about distance.

Three questions to carry forward

  1. Does this scale define equal distances or only an order among labels?
  2. What justifies treating a movement between labels as a measurable amount?
  3. Which conclusions remain valid if the spacing between positions is unknown?
