A note for your reading

When two features move together, it is tempting to draw an arrow from one to the other. Before doing that, consider whether a shared influence could produce both. In a hypothetical record, a common input might account for their association without either feature causing the other. Listing that possibility does not establish it as the explanation. It gives the causal claim a competitor to address. A careful reader can acknowledge the association while asking what additional comparison would help separate the proposed direction of influence from the shared influence.

Three questions to carry forward

  1. Could a shared influence explain why these features appear together here?
  2. What comparison would help separate that possibility from the proposed causal direction?
  3. Which part of the argument supports the direction of the claimed influence?
