Reasoning / 02

A note for your reading

Sometimes an argument asks you to accept its conclusion before it has earned it. Suppose a description calls an account trustworthy because its claims are reliable, then calls those claims reliable because the account is trustworthy. The wording changes, but the support travels in a circle. To examine the argument, separate each reason from the statement it supports. Look for a reason that can be checked without already accepting the conclusion. This does not prove the conclusion wrong. It identifies the additional support needed to move the discussion beyond repetition.

Keep asking / 03

Three questions to carry forward

  1. Does any supporting reason depend on accepting the conclusion in advance?
  2. Which part of the argument could be checked without that assumption?
  3. Would replacing the wording leave the same circular dependency in place?
