Reasoning / 02

A note for your reading

A condition can be required for a conclusion without being enough to establish it. Consider a set of entry rules: meeting a required rule removes one obstacle, but other requirements might remain. Conversely, a combination that guarantees entry need not be the only combination that does so. When reading an argument, notice whether it says must have, enough to establish, or both. Those phrases make different commitments. Translating the claim into a simple if statement helps reveal whether the reasoning has quietly turned a requirement into a guarantee.

Three questions to carry forward

  1. Is this condition presented as required, sufficient, or both at once?
  2. What other requirements could remain after this particular condition has been met?
  3. Does the conclusion mistakenly treat passing a requirement as a complete guarantee?
